About Our Text: Our digital graphic novel is included with your enrollment in the course! Students will be reading Billy y Las Botas, a very silly Spanish-language graphic novel that includes audio and glossary, so students can listen and look up any unknown words as they read! The level of the dialogue can be adapted (ie. made easier or more difficult) to each student’s individual level!
Prerequisite: Ability to have a 1-minute, simple conversation in Spanish in the present tense, or completion of Beginner Spanish 101.

What makes us different? Unlike that Spanish class you took in high school, classes at Spanish with Ariel focus on SPEAKING! Each course (yes, even Beginner 101) is taught via immersion using the comprehensible input technique, which evidence shows is key in building fluency. Class sizes are small, giving you plenty of individualized feedback and opportunities to practice speaking in a low-pressure environment.

Summer 2026 Session FAQ
When do classes take place? Our summer classes meet once a week on Thursday evenings and run from June 25, 2026 - August 20, 2026.
Where are classes offered? Our classes meet on zoom.
What are your class sizes? Each class is capped at 8 students, so that you receive ample opportunities to practice speaking and the individual feedback necessary to improve your conversational skills.
Will your classes help me become fluent? Yes! At Spanish with Ariel, we focus on building conversational skills. Each live class maximizes speaking practice through discussions, role plays and games.
Do I have to purchase a textbook? Speaking Through Stories Beginner-level students will receive their digital graphic novel included with their enrollment. Speaking Through Stories Intermediate-level students may need to purchase a novel, which will cost no more than $15.
What happens if I miss a class? All live sessions are recorded, so if you miss a class, you can watch the recording and catch up on what you missed.
How do conversation partners work? At the beginning of each session, each student will be assigned a conversation partner from their class. For select weeks of class, students will be expected to set aside about 15 minutes in that given week to chat with their conversation partner outside of class. Students will be connected with their conversation partner by email, and they have the option to choose a method of communication (phone, zoom, or other messenger app) and mode of communication (audio call, video call or voice notes) that works for them.
Why are your live sessions only 75 minutes long? Our courses are taught using a “flipped classroom,” meaning that students complete “pre-tarea,” or a self guided lesson, before class containing all of the grammar and vocabulary we will be learning. This allows us to maximize our speaking practice during class! It also means that students arrive to class ready to speak, which helps reduce nerves!

Outside of class, students listen to, watch, and read Spanish-language stories at their own pace. In our live sessions, students practice speaking through discussions, debates, games and role-play activities.
Theme: Our winter 2026 theme is “Cultura en movimiento.” We will be listening to authentic Spanish-language stories in order to examine how our cultural identities shift over time and place.

Through interactive and conversation-based activities, students will learn and practice talking about past experiences and detailed telling stories using the following grammatical tenses: preterite (ie. fui), imperfect (ie. iba), preterite perfect (ie. ha ido), past perfect (ie. había ido), and past continuous (ie. estaba yendo).

Prerequisite: Talking About The Past I and II. Or, ability to tell stories about what you did in the past using the preterite and imperfect tenses.
